Didn't seem to go over well on that paddling site. Try a true solo canoe if you are going by yourself most of the time. Rent a tandem for the occasional friend that wants to fish.

I think a few folks on here have some experience with them ..a little more $ than the mad river but not much. Real ligh. I surmise they both woulld be a bugger in the wind tho.

Here's my collection sites of Solo canoe manufacturers. Yes, they are easily maneuvered but I'd suggest you get some canoing instruction - Check with your local Red Cross Safety services - they certify Small Craft instructors.

Agree with Houdini although you could bring along a kayak paddle and a canoe paddle. Until you figure out what you are doing with the canoe paddle, the kayak paddle works well in solo canoes.
I have the Hemlock Kestrel which is perfect for my size and weight. I don't have issues with wind pushing me around or off course. A well designed canoe fitted to your weight/height should be very easy to control and would not be as affected by wind as an ill designed boat,

Well, as a start, add up the weight you'll want to carry (including gear) and then look at cargo capacity of the canoes you are considering. I'd suggest you go up to a 15 or 16 foot model if it's going to be two people - remember, he's going to grow and paddle (hopefully) someday. And you'll want some freeboard to handle waves.
