Had our first good convective storms of the year last week, one of which rolled through about 10 miles from my house. The visibility was pretty good for Florida. All of these were shot with a Sigma 10-20 mm lens.
Shutter time was anywhere from 1.5 s up to 10 s and aperture was from f/22 to f/9. All of these were shot at base ISO. I shoot full manual and adjust the setting continuously depending on the light conditions (or lack thereof) and desired color-cast of the output. You are in a superb area for lightning photography (lots of open spaces, particularly the bay, with some interesting foreground options). Up here, finding an area with any visibility is tough with all the pine trees. I'm lucky to have a huge farm a few miles from the house which offers decent visibility if the storm is in the right direction. If your camera doesn't have an intervalometer (mine doesn't), it is worthwhile to invest in an automated remote shutter release for taking continuous exposures. I use a Phottix Cleon (about $35).
