Shortening rod blanks

Post by islander »

Will I run into any trouble if I cut two feet off the butt of a blank?

 :D

update (if anyone else is interested):

I asked on another board and got a few responses. Nobody seems to know if you can hack apart a blank. The advice I did get was to buy a multi-piece blank and leave off a few sections. Good idea.

I was directed to www.dorber.com. They sell 4.5' and 5' blanks in 4wt. sizes. Cheap too. I'm looking to build a "brush rod" for tight streams and for those little beach snook. I'm thinking the shorter length will result in fewer spooked snook???

This stuff is addicting.

Very good price and makes a lot of sense....oversized guides , smaller length and still able to get line out with only 7-8 ft of load...hmmm ?
maybe even a little easier to use in the yak??

Off the blank or off an already manufactured rod?

Cutting length off the rod is something I do routinely. Then after I get the cork grips and reel seat put on how I want it, I manually do the guide spacing. My rod building mentor taught me how to do the guide spacing.

Conversely, you can cut some off the tip of the rod if you want to make a stouter rod.

Off of a blank.

I found two manufacturers that carry the length I was looking for, so that solved the problem.

Thanks for the info, though. I thought I could get away with it.

I'd still recommend testing out your guide spacing manually.

good luck with your "future" rods

Are you building a fly rod or a spinning rod? A 4wt would be awfully light for either use in saltwater.

Its a utility fly rod. I've got those tight streams in Georgia in mind. I'll be using it on the little beach snook too.
