Clearwater Tarpon

Post by Pitt »

Just moved here and I've been checking your site for pointers but haven't ever posted anything. Went out with SteveN and another guy new to kayak fishing and before all the lines were even wet...

Welcome to Club April. Very exclusive membership.

Here's a pointer. Fight harder. And then fight a little harder. Change direction of the pull over and over. That just pulling up is too easy on the fish. Pull sideways with rod parallel to the water and once the fish gets use to that pull in the opposite direction. Doing that will whip the fish in 15-20 minutes and is actually much healthier for the fish. Plus, it gives her less time to get off the hook!

Who was that on the rod?

Congrats!

Only his second time kayak fishing. We weren't planning an epic tarpon battle. He's from Minnesota and had 20 lb mono leader that eventually shredded. I told him he should turn around and go back to the launch.... Cuz it won't get any better than that!

Very cool. That's like a new deer hunter shooting a ten pointer with a 22" spread on his first hunt. Congrats.

Great job. Love beginners luck. Now are tarpon fishing juices are flowing.
Being out on the water in the kayak is the prize. Catching fish is the bonus.

20 pound leader, it is amazing he had the fish on for more than 15 seconds.

Then he did a good job. As sfurman said, I'm surprised he had him on as long as he did with 20 pound leader.
