The Flatties Are Here

Post by Gibby3474 »

This is a great time of year to target flounder. Last Friday, Vinny and I spent the last hour of our trip on Sarasota Bay targetting flounder. We used MirrOlure Little Johns on light jig heads. We found lots of flounder on sand bottoms along the grass edges. Just let the jig fall to the bottom and work slowly. We caught 11 nice flounder in an hour.

October and November traditionally are great flounder months.

OK I have a question. I was in Biscayne Bay last weekend fishing for trout and while I was in shallow water I was less than 2 feet from a flounder laying on the bottom. He was about 18-20" long. Never really thought about fishing for flounder in the bay. Haven't caught one in 20+years and last time was up in Jax. We used live finger mullet back then.

Question: What lures would you guys recommend for flounder? Most of my fishing is in 1 1/2'-10' of water.

These: (http://www.basspro.com/Offshore-Angler- ... duct/8369/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) 4in, in either pearl, white/pink, or chartreuse work very well. May want to buy a few packs. Small, toothy critters like to munch on the tails at times. Even with the tails bitten off, they've proved successful.

The Berkley Gulp Swimming Mullet (http://www.basspro.com/Berkley-Inshore- ... uct/58013/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) work well too. They're a litter pricier, but stronger too.

Most soft plastics on jigs will work on them, low and slow. I also have great luck with bucktail jigs.

ps. Nice flatties Steve!

I have been doing well on the MirrOlure Little John (soft plastic) on a 1/16-ounce jig head. Just let the jig fall to the bottom and work slowly. Doesn't take long when the flounder are thick.

OK then next question: I saw this flounder in very shallow water in a sandy patch surrounded by grass. The pin fish are very thick in this area. Where should I be targeting these fish? Sandy open areas that are deeper or sand patches surrounded by grass or both?
