Two hands or one hand?

When you cast a spinning rod, do you use one hand or two hands most of the time?

Two hands or one hand?

Post by Rik »

just curious.

I see both. I almost always use both hands. When I use just one, I am very aware of every movement because it feels so wrong.

Yes, there are specific instances - very short casts - where one hand is the rule but I'm a two hander the rest of the time.

I feel pretty much the same way. Feels strange to cast with one hand for me. The one handed short casts that you are talking about are almost always backhand casts for me. I'll even use 2 on a short forehand cast.

Both hands for me also. Every so often I try to cast with one but it just doesn't work. The timing of releasing the line is way off.

Two, unless it's a short underhand flip/pitch or an over-the-shoulder toss toward something behind me.

I always feel like the rod is going to fly out of my hand when I make a long one handed cast. Odd that it never comes to mind with a fly rod but always feels that way with a spinning rod.

Different physics. The weight of the fly reel is below your hand, and there is (or should be) no "pivot".

Depends on the cast.
Long as in for distance, both.
Short or low and accurate one.
Either hand. Yes.

One hand, thank you very much. About the only time I use 2 is flinging the big rod with bait  .

Two hands. I use the front hand like a fulcrum and the rear hand to power the pivot.
