size question

If you use one that is listed, please add a review. If a kayak or canoe that you would like to give a review of is not listed, please add it. This is also where you can show off your boat.

size question

Post by Keith B »

I am planning a trip into Flamingo for two days. I have a OK Caper, do you think I am in over my head in this kayak? Should I try to borrow a larger one?
Thanks

My guess is that it is too small. You should probably weigh all of the gear you plan on bringing and see if it, combined with your weight, will fit within the 275-325 max capacity of the Caper. You do not want to push this limit. If you overload the boat, it will handle poorly, and increase your chances of rolling it. Obviously not a good thing when you are way out in the wilderness. Further, try to pack it all into the boat to see if it fits. If it were me, and you have the option, I would borrow a bigger boat.

14 ft. is kinda vague, but probably better. I would still do the weight and fit thing. It's best to know before you get down there.

I should not have much in the kayak each day of fishing as we plan to ferry the gear and kayaks in and fish from them each day. Would this make a difference?
I am working on a bigger angler version kayak.
Thanks for the help. This is why I am asking so many questions well in advance...I dont want to find out the hard way.

You could do it in a 9 ft kayak as long as you are doing the ferry thing.

However, if you borrow a 14 foot you'll fall in love and want to replace that Caper!

Ok great. If it won't be dangerous I may go this route.
I would not have anymore gear than a normal day on the river.
I trust you guy's opinion so shoot me straight :thumbright:

The only problem with the shorter kayak is the transport and long paddle of camping stuff. If you have a skiff doing all that, it's just another day of fishing.

But you'd still be happier in a longer kayak!

I think your Caper should be fine if you are just fishing out of it. I would only suggest a longer kayak if you are hauling a lot of stuff, paddling long distances or being chased by a :gator: . Actually, your Caper may work out better if you are ferrying it in.

Thanks. If I am chased by a gator the kayak is going to get a lot messier, if you know what I mean.
That brings up another question. Has anyone ever had a gator/croc try to take your fish off the line for you in this area? I have had that happen in Hilton Head but I was fishing from the bank. How do you handle it in a kayak.

I may just go with my caper.
Thanks
