U.P. ???

Post by DaveR »

I'm entertaing the thought of heading up to the U.P. of Michigan end of the summer for a kayak fishing car camping gimmick. Anybody have any experience in this area?

Used to do a lot of skiing up there. Went salmon fishing a mile from the Northern Michigan University campus once on a college visit. All I can tell you is that Marquette is the largest town up there, the locals sound like they are from Canada Eh, and you should stop somewhere and eat a pasty.

Oh yeah, their end of summer is in about 3 weeks. Very beautiful place.

Looking for good fishable waters with accessable tent camping. Primative is just fine. Smallies, largemouth, and northerns would be nice. Anything in the Hiawatha National Forest? I'm thinking smaller lakes/rivers.

Who are you trying to kid? You'll never get past Mackinac Island.
Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley

I used to play Euchre for hours when I lived in the log lodge with no electricity or running water. Cribbage was the other evening entertainment that replaced television. In the winter it's naked cross-country skiing after a Sauna. I sure do miss da U.P.!

I wasn't sure if cribbage was popular up there. I sure used to play a hell of a lot if it with the old timers during opening weekend of trout season in N. Wisco.

So it will be the Sylvania Wilderness. Camping on Crooked Lake in late August.
If anyone has been there and can tell me where the smallies are I'd love you forever. If you're in the nieghborhood drop by for a fine Irish around 6 on the 26th.

Here is another that lists the Sylvania/ Geogebic lakes:

another possibility close to crooked lake ..Watersmeet

Oh yeah don't forget your tubes rigged ala Dirty Dave style.

Is that because He'll see all the lakes on the way and say something like.."OOOO...OOOO..let's stop there?..

If you are going through MI and not WI and have the time try Alcona Pond or Fletchers Floodwaters Pond

After a decade of camping decadence I'm looking forward to some good old fashioned minimalism. Probably won't be long before I miss the air mattress and cast iron skillet.
