Captain Mikes Gold Spoon
I was just given a Captain Mikes gold spoon by a friend of mine and I was wondering if any of you have ever used this lure before. The spoon is 3/8 oz and looks to be well built.

I never had much luck with spoons (esp Capt. Mike's) until I started using johnson silver minnows.... now I don't use any other spoon.

Thanks for all of the input on the spoons guys. I went out to Fort Desoto yesterday and casted it around a few times and had no luck at all with it. I have a Johnson silver spoon too and I have never used it before. Is the spoon that you guys use weedless?

I like the Johson spoon in the super small size...especially now with all the new born crabs in the water. I have one tied on now that is just 2 inches long...They were in the closeout bin at Holy Mackeral for $1.99 because everybody loves the bigger spoons.
I think I can dance.

Is this the one that is weedless or is it small with treble hooks?Mangrove Man wrote:I like the Johson spoon in the super small size...especially now with all the new born crabs in the water. Rob, most of us use the weedless one.

Good point that most don't know. The bigger the spoon blade the shallower they run even though they are heavier.chipm wrote: The larger size runs more shallow than the smaller.
I have used the Capt. Mike Spoons a lot, I really like the hammered copper ones. I prefer a Johnson Silver Minnow but the corrosion issues get old after awhile, they don't last near as long as a Capt Mikes.

True the big one are easier to run shallower...I like crashing the grass and being close to the bottom so the small one works well for me. It is also quieter when it lands and is less spooky to some fish..plus it takes a trailer well.
here is a comparison of size.

Up here, the Captain Mikes weedless spoon is very popular. Spoons are a great lure to find fish with. I always have a rod rigged with one. Gold with the pink sticker works great. The 1/4 oz throws farther than the 3/8. Must be less wind resistance.
One side note. Because the hook is screwed on, I always check for extra tightness with a screwdriver before tying one on.

Thanks for the info. Is the 1 on the bottom a 3/4 oz Gold spoon?Mangrove Man wrote:True the big one are easier to run shallower...I like crashing the grass and being close to the bottom so the small one works well for me.
