My olympus stylus 710 has gone south on me for the second time and I don't want to put good money after bad. When I bought it the 710 was considered a good camera for being on the water but I know how technology changes. What's the consensus on a new yak proof camera?

Pentax Optio - it takes alot of beating and underwater shots and keeps on working great.

Make sure you buy the float strap. I bought mine on Amazon.com for $13 with shipping.

Olympus gets my vote, and I use the 1030sw. No problems at all. The 800 series is really coming down in price and can be had in the $200 range. Doesn't have the waterproof depth and it's 8 megapixel, but you can shave a hundred bucks off the price of a 1030. Play with the scene modes. The auto setting tends to wash out. Great images once you get used to it.

Sams Club has the Olympus 850 in orange for $160 and it comes with a float strap. figure about $30 for a 2GB card, and you are set. My dad, bro-in-law, and myself all bought one last friday, and we like them so far!

optio W60, fastrer than the Olympus cameras and I can vouch for their tough nature...it usually stays in my wet PFD front pocket for most of the week till it goes in the kayak. I have the W20 as well and after 3 years of service it still works great. The only bad thing I will say about the Optio line is they take so-so low-light shots, otherwise they are perfect for kayak fishing.

....and the Optio is a little more user friendly.

I do like the little auto lens cover on the Olympus though.

thats the other thing I should have mentioned: lens cover, would be really nice but I've yet to scratch either one of my optio's...but it would be lovely to have the piece of mind.
