A friend and I went to the secret place in the Big bend this morning. Full Moon brought really low tides and when we got out, there were lots of reds tailing and digging in the bottom. The bite was only 30 minutes and they disappeared for the rest of the day.
Bill caught his personal best red on a Mirrowminnow.

Low tide is right It was cold too. 32 degrees and -0.9 low. I found the fish in the depressions and threw that darn mirrowminnow with no luck. I had good results with the good old gold spoon I caught a half dozen in the 21 to 22 inch range and a few smaller ones. Only one trout though they were not biting anything.
¼ mile out the creek. I had to wade the entire length of the secret creek.
Looking East.
Looking North.
Looking West.
The first red.

I didn't try any jerk baits but that might have worked too. I found that if I let the spoon sink to the bottom and then just slowly retrieve it or even jig it I would get hits. They were mostly in the depressions but that first one was a wake that I cast too and he jumped right on it. I only fished till about noon.
I have a fly rod but I don't use it much at all. I need to get a new one. Mine is a 9' nine wt and I think I would get more use out of a smaller rod. Like a 8' 7 wt. That 9 wears me out for the results I get with it.

Great pics furman. A 6 or 7wt is about as much rod as you need up here for the trout and reds. Snook, free casting lessons if you bring the beer...

Yes, nice pics Steve. Ditto on the 6wt or 7wt.BearsFan wrote:Great pics furman. A 6 or 7wt is about as much rod as you need up here for the trout and reds. Snook, free casting lessons if you bring the beer...
Roger, it will be less expensive to pay for lessons at the most elite flyfishing school there is vs.bringing enough beer for the bearsfan!

Peter,
hook up with Roger (snook 712) and give him some pointers. Take him over to WB. He needs to hook up with you and fish some more big bend spots.

Roger, just let me know whenever works for you. I am pretty flexible.
Hey Suber, I hope all is going well. Do you have a relative in the mid 20's who was recently married?

I have actually seen it lower. Yea the 9 weight is a bit too much. I want an 8' 7 wt. That is plenty of rod. I need to get back into the fly I haven't done it for a long time. Hope to get up next week end but will probably do some scouting for turkeys. It is getting close to that time again and I can't wait.
