Uni to Uni Knot - How Many Raps

Post by J.P. FROG »

I've, in the past, have used the Slim Beauty Knot and a modified version of the Albright Special Knot to tie my braided line to my leader.

I've never used the popular Uni to Uni Knot. I know how to tie the Uni Knot but would like to know how many 'raps' you make with the leader and the braid. Which number of raps of each gives optimum strength with least resistance for the knots passing through the guides on your rod?

I tie my leader on with a uni-to-uni with the braid doubled and six turns for both the braid and leader.

With the other end still on the leader spool, I measure down to the guide on the particular rod that gives me the ideal starting leader length. The ideal length is the longest line for casting but still not too long to get reeled up past the tip top.

Don't you end up with a very small leader after retieng a few times?

Does anyone else here double the braid on the uni-uni? I'm trying to figure out a way to make my knots smaller...

Larry Dahlberg who does "The Hunt for Big Fish" says with a heavy leader, more than 3 turns with the leader isnt needed. Doug Hannon has a video on youtube that shows using only one turn with a heavy leader to keep it slim. I tried that this last week and it worked using 30lb mono for a leader with 20lb. Fireline as a mainline. The knot was great and small, fireline stunk...

Hmm. Mine broke with a big red on and 3 or four wraps of the leader. I just cannot see one wrap holding.

Agreed..that makes it a simple overhand knot over the braid...

Also dump Vanish if that is the leader material you are using,,Go with yozuri or P-Line.

5 wraps on 30 lb. mono with 7 to 9 wraps on 10 lb. PP. If I am feeling really conscientious about it, I will then put a drop of CA on the knot. I have noticed that the wraps on the mono will come undone after many casts through the rod tip guide. The CA helps with that.
