photo report from Baja

Post by Jim Sammons LJKF »

Report from our recent trip to Punta Colorada in Baja's East Cape

Ron with the first Roosterfish of the trip
Image

Curtis, bendo in the big game
Image

Curtis, notice the self inflating PFD, it got splashed and blew up
Image

His first Roosterfish
Image

Robs first Roosterfish
Image

Marty’s first Rooster
Image

Ben’s Roosterfish
Image

Good release
Image

Any other trip these are good Roosters
Image

Image

But not when you are catching more of them this size and bigger
Image

Image

A couple nice little JC
Image

Image

This Rooster is well over 50lbs
Image

Ron with another nice one, he dropped it in the water before I could get a good shot of it
Image

Rob Bendo in front of Punta Arena
Image

His dad hits the same spot for a hookup
Image

Another 45-50lb Rooster
Image

When you didn’t get a Rooster the JC kept you busy
Image

And another big one for Curtis
Image

Rod with one of the bigger fish from the trip, up in the 60’s
Image

And another for Marty
Image

And now something from the nature channel
Image

On the second half of the trip things cooled down a bit but still some great fish where landed, including this Rooster from Josh
Image

Pompano
Image

Vince with a nice Dorado
Image

Chris on the left helping his dad Tony with his Dorado
Image

Josh and his 24lb Tuna
Image

This fish deserves a few shots. A new kayak fishing record 75lb Rooster fish from Tony Adams. I spoke with the people at Boga grip today and they said it take at least 70lbs to max the scale and this fish did it easy so we are calling it 75lbs.

Image

Steve and his 58 pound Rooster, this fish dragged him at least a mile and a half off shore after hooking it right next to the beach. Took him a hour and a half
Image

Image

Chris and his 26lb Dorado
Image

Overall a great trip with more big Roosters landed and released then on any other trip. We saw a lot of Marlin but only had three actually take a bait but none stuck for more than a couple of minutes.
Great trip with great groups.

Nice roosters! I cant imagine how much fun that probably was. I caught a 30 lb rooster when I was in Guatemala and that thing gave me an incredible fight. Nothing compares to the power those fish have, they put jacks to shame.

Jim as always thanks for sharing your reports from the other coast. I kept waiting for the pictures to end. Those big rooster fish look awesome and some great photos in there as well. Sounds like a very good trip overall.

That is a BIG rooster fish. I have caught several but never one that size. What are you using for bait?

Ooops-edited to replace the pic.

Didn't weigh that one but certainly in the 50lb class. We had several in that range a couple that would appear to be in the 60 range and then the real big one that we are calling 75lbs. Caught by Tony Adams.

All of these big Roosters where caught on live mullet.

Great report.

That Pompano looks delicious...

What, if anything, was kept? Seems like between the dorado and that pomp you could have gotten a good meal out of that trip

We kept a few Tuna, had fresh Sashimi with cold Pacificos after fishing. The Dorado, one was cooked up for our dinner one night, the Pompano and a couple of Pargo. All Roosterfish were release healthy, though I did have to jump in the water to assist one on it's way as were the JC and the one small hammerhead shark. All billfish managed to release themselves
