New Design for 2008 Part 1

Post by noles »

This is my first carbon composite rod grips. It turned out OK; but there's still room for improvement. The composite grip is suppose to be 30% lighter than regular cork grip handle. So in my quest for building light rods; I had to give it a try. The completed rod wieghed in at 5.4 oz. The rod was built with a St. Croix SCIII blank, Fuji Alconite guides & reel seat.

Here's what other options (borrowed from RodMaker magazine):

That is a very interesting look. Is the CF a solid rod or did you have to arbor it? Nice looking tiger wrap too.

Wouldn't that composite get slippery with wet hands or fish slime?

It would seem hard to step away from a cork handle.

I will have to say Noles you are really stepping up your game lately. Very impressive work you have been puttng out. Going to quit your day job soon?

What would it have weighed with a conventional build?
Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley

Not sure; I may have to build a duplicate rod using the conventional build and compare the two.

From what I've been told it's not much of an issue. It has the same feel as one of my custom grips. I'll know for sure once I put it to the test.

Nice looking rod but 5.4oz. sounds heavy. The heaviest St.Croix Avid rods that use the SCIII blanks is a 7' MH rod that is only 4.3oz. Which rod do you use?

Seriously though, I think I have to get a subscription to that mag. I'd love to see how it's done. However I do think Todd has a valid point. Carbon would be slippery. I have on of those texilem grips. Very slick.

You don't have to worry about that

Noles wouldn't a split cork grip lighten it up more?
