Your thoughts on split grips?

Post by Gramps »

I'm toying with the idea of building a spin rod with split grips. They looks like the perfect grip for me. 95% of the time I hold the rod around the reel seat with the reel between my 3rd & 4th fingers, and with my index finger on the fore grip. And the butt for casting. The mail man has some chokecherry burl for the grips; they will get the "ca" finish. Plus it looks damn cool!

And across from the bar there's a pile of beer cans
Been there twenty-seven years
Imagine all the heart aches and tears
In twenty-seven years of beer

Here's one of my personal rods. A split grip is a good way to shave some weight off a rod.

Noles,

Nice work, I like the layout. Two questions: It is not apparent in the photo, is the blank exposed under the reel seat and have you omitted a grip directly infront of the reel seat?

Shep,
Cork doesn't weigh that much but shaving weight of a rod is always a good thing. The more weight you shave off the better, even when it's in ounces.

Brian,
The rod is a spinning rod so the blank is not expose under the seat. I did omit the fore grip all together. There's really no need for one.

I've built two rods like this also. I make no excuse, I did it because it looks cool!

Noles split grip is one sweet rod !! Luckily he doesn't letme use it more often , I'd have to let him build me one. As it is I'm saving up for a nice 8wt.
