I find its easiest to touch my finger to the lip of the spool and pull off line down to the knot. This prevents several loops from coming off the spool at the same time.
It also helps to drop the excess line into the water if possible. Its less likely to tangle as your reeling it back on.
If the loop is buried deep, I will make a short cast and then pull off the rest.
