Sometimes you're just lucky

Post by DaveR »

Trusty 5wt in hand it was off to see what the low tide could deliver this morning. Wasn't on the water very long before I saw 2 reds milling about in the 6" water. Just as I got into range and was about to cast 3 sandhill cranes treated the three of us to a very low fly over. I was amused. The reds apparently were not as they bolted to parts unknown.
It was a bit later when I saw another red, back fully out of the water, and was able to get this little fella to eat.

I had two more good shots at redfish. One came unbuttoned and the other just spooked out.
Wind had picked up a bit and it was time to go and not 100 feet from the launch I see a snook cruising the shoreline. I wasn't set up for snook as I only had 12 lb flourocarbon leader on but who can pass up the shot? A cast, a strip, and she ate.
I expected the leader to part any second but even after a couple jumps the fish stayed hooked. Even wrapped me around a stick for a short time.
As luck would have it the fly was hooked just right I guess so the leader wasn't constantly being worked by her teeth. After a few minutes of touch and go I got her willing to take a picture. Didn't measure but close to 30 I would guess.

Good stuff Dave
Over every mountain there is a path, although it may not be seen from the valley

Thanks but probably more like 28. Close to 30 just reads better.;)

Nice morning. Mine was snook flounder and a quick swim. Will write about it later.
Being out on the water in the kayak is the prize. Catching fish is the bonus.

Very nice, your killing me!
My best shot today was at a nice tailer about 40ft out and my false cast spooked two at 20ft that were not tailing, blowing them all out.
Great job Dave.

I know you don't catch many but next time one of your buddies catches one rub your finger cross the inside of its lips. Yes, snook have teeth.
