Terra Ceia Salt Marsh Restoration: October 23.

Post by TerryW »

Unfortunately, this is the same date as the October PFTS.

************

Tampa Bay Watch in partnership with Southwest Florida Water Management District plans a large community salt marsh restoration project on the morning of Saturday, October 23. We aim to recruit 200 volunteers to plant over 20,000 plugs of salt marsh. The plants will be harvested from Port Manatee Fish Hatchery donor site to be planted at Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve located in Manatee County just north of Palmetto.

Volunteers will break ground at 9:00 a.m., planting plugs of Spartina alterniflora, salt marsh or smooth cord grass, along a series of restored and created coastal tidal ponds and islands in the Terra Ceia Aquatic Preserve. This project is Tampa Bay’s largest salt marsh restoration project and a joint acquisition between the Southwest Florida Water Management District and the State of Florida. Salt marsh planting projects are an environmental tool for restoring lost coastal habitat. Click here to read more on salt marsh restoration.

Pre-registration is required. Please contact Rachel to sign up for this event. [email protected]

Information for registered volunteers:

* Directions will be posted as the event gets closer.
* This is a very muddy project, you will get dirty! You'll need to wear clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting wet and dirty.
* Please remember to wear shoes that tie to your feet.
* Bring a towel to dry off and a plastic bag to put your wet shoes in when finished.
* Please bring a water bottle to fill up and carry with you. There will be coolers full of water, but they will be scattered throughout the site.
* There will be no running water at Terra Ceia. It is a natural area, so there are no spigots.
