Memorial Day

Post by Mohawk16 »

I hope we can all step back from our grills, picnics, and other activities for a moment and remember those who died for our freedom. I don't think many people understand the true meaning of Memorial Day.

"Memorial Day is a United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May 31 in 2010). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who died while in the military service."

Our living veterans are honored on Veterans Day. Even our all-knowing news media can't seem to get it right.

My uncle was KIA on Guadalcanal, and my brother was KIA in Vietnam. God bless all those who made the supreme sacrifice.

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
I have my poppy and thank you to all veterans past and present.

Sitting out on the water this morning, I turned to Rik and told him "This is my church". Its also a place I reflect back to younger days.

I said a small prayer for those that I served with, some no longer with us, some still serving. May God bless them and this great country.
