Did the annual trek to the wilds of Ontario, looking for smallmouth in September. The fish cooperated, most were caught on topwater plugs, which was particularly enjoyable. On one day I caught 32 all on surface plugs. Quite a few northerns but they were not targeted. No muskies. 30-40 bass per day for each fisherman. Other than the aerial performances, smallmouth remind me of redfish, they pull like they are on steroids. This year was warm, as you can see and we had a few bugs but nothing we couldn't deal with.
This year we drove in to the outfitter and then they few us to the lake.
Only cabin on the lake.
Mark & Greg tackle up.
Typical smallies.
Steve relaxing before going out again.
Glad to be home, though. Would have liked some cooler weather. If you have never done a flyin trip, put it one your "bucket list".

No doubt, they are great trips.ratherbefishin wrote: If you have never done a flyin trip, put it one your "bucket list".
Have never been smallmouth fishing, after your report I might have to look into it.
What was the name of the outfitter you used?

We used Gateway North Outfitters, Lucas and Nichole are good folks and they always treat us well. This was our seventh trip. Grant Lake is a good smallmouth destination, but they have others as well. They are located north of Emo, Ontario, about an hour north of the border crossing at International Falls, Minn.
