Nice red & permit or pomp?

Post by TerryW »

I lost three very nice fish today and don't really know what I was doing wrong with my topwater. Finally, I got the skunk of with some small trout.

After fighting the wind and pedaling and paddling my butt off (I wish), two pre-fishing hole jumpers starting getting a bit close and brought me some good luck. BLAMMO, fish on.

Although I tried my best to lose him & had to get out of the dang kayak in brrrrrrrr cold shark infested waters, this fat 28 " red was finally landed. Man, big reds really get me excited.

This nice guy seemed a few inches taller today:

And he borrowed my lucky rod & caught this - permit or pompano. Whatever it was, it was much bigger than it appears in this photo. A very nice and unexpected fish.

Steve -- you do realize that you bring me good luck, right? Remember the last time we were fishing nearby? I caught that beautiful 34.5" snook.

Where are you fishing tomorrow? It was good to see you both out there.

One of my friends said once, "the fish follow that SOB around".

It was nice to seeing you out there today Terry. I think that Red was only 27 inches long when you hooked him. He about whooped you! :P
I believe they have more fight in them this time of year. I had four of them that found my hook today and one Trout. I'm tempted to go back tomorrow!

Nice red Terri!!!

Shark infested you say? Where are these shark infested waters, I got a new offshore combo last week, a shimano corvalus CLV400 baitcaster and a nice shimano sojourn rod paired with it last week for use offshore but by the looks of the forecast, I wont be able to use it offshore....So Shark fishing may be a great way to break her in 8) . Certainly got a better feel than my other cheapo baitcasting setup, and casts a topwater farther than I can with my spinning...(too bad I cant seem to get that walk the dog rythem down when cranking the handle with the opposite hand from what I'm used to  ).

I got one of those today. Mmmmmmmm good! I attribute it to the blood chum my fishing partner was dripping in the water.

Rooster -- I was sort of kidding about the shark area, although we all know they are everywhere we fish. The funny thing was that today I saw a decent sized one cruising the flats.

I've now had two of my SE FL fishing friends tell me that the fish Noles caught was definitely a Permit.

The last time I caught either one of those fish that weren't of a puny size, I lost a brand new GLoomis rod and new reel and Hank almost lost his finger. Big Permit and Pompano can flat out fight.
