Sand fleas in the surf?

Post by DRIFT-O-MATIC »

Hi guys,
This is the first time for me visiting the East Coast Forum. I mostly fish in the Clearwater area. I'm going to be taking a trip to the Daytona area soon, and was wondering if y'all could tell me if there are sand fleas (mole crabs) to be found in the surf over there, this time of the year. I remember fishing the Flagler Pier many years ago for sheepshead, using fleas that I found in the surf, around the pier. Thanks for any info.

Sand fleas

Post by bluebill »

I have a friend that fishes the beach frequently near Jensen Beach. The beach buffs there use conventional spinning rods and dense small spoons for snook, bluefish, jacks and tarpon in the summer.

My friend likes to fish for whiting when the other fish are not biting and he uses a small thick nickle spoon with a 6" leader from the bottom of the spoon to a small hook. The hook is baited with a Gulp sand flea imitation.
The small heavy spoon bumps the bottom in the trough and flashes and the whiting grab the sand flea imitation. Works very well.
Be thankful for every day and especially those fine days on the water

Bluebill, thanks a bunch for that information. I may give those Gulps a try. I've never used them before. I'm still going to try to find some livies, though, just in case they only want the real stuff. I'm going to go to the Flagler Fishing Pier. Maybe someone on this board who is familiar with that beach will post if the fleas are in the surf.

S.S. Tupperware, thanks for the tip. They are deep, huh? Are they where the surf breaks on the beach, or out a little farther?

David,
No luck finding anyone who has been harvesting fleas over this way. I'll let you know if I hear anything but no one seems to be raking them over here.

Thanks, Neil. Did you have a chance to rake any on the Gulf side of Caledesi, yesterday?
