I took my new kayak out to the beach to try and catch some sharks on wednesday.








I took whole large mullet for bait attached to a 10/0 hook and 7 ft. of 200 lb cable. I attached that to 10 ft. of 60 lb mono leader, then to 500+ yards of 40 lb PowerPro. I paddled the bait out between 300 yards and 400 yards.

I caught several sharks, they were all of the same species, and none were longer than about 4.5 feet.

I don't know exactly what species they were. I ruled out blacktip and spinner shark because there were no fin marking's. They were not lemon's. They didn't have a tall enough dorsal fin to be sandbar sharks. I don't think they were sharpnose. The only thing that I am left with is finetooth shark. Anyone that knows what they are please chime in.

The surfing action looked like fun enough! I wouldn't do that in my Tarpon 16. It gets up and starts going nicely but halfway down the face, it takes a SHARP turn up the wave. Take it perpendicular to the wave and it's 50/50 which way it goes.

And since this is another "Fish ID" test, I'd say lemon shark.

No they are not lemons, the second dorsal isn't big enough.

+1 we've always called them sand sharks and they get up to about 6' and put up a great fight. You usually have to let them run with the bait a while before setting the hook, but once you st it the fireworks begin!
