Fished a bait holding area just South of Melbourne today. There were tarpon crashing the bait and free jumping all morning. Aroung 10:00 or so the kings began to skyrocket, some were in the 60lb class. The bait pods consisted of menhaden and ribbon fish. We freelined with both slow trolled and drifetd with the kayaks, in the bait pods and on the outsides. No tarpon, 2 bite offs most likely from kings or sharks. No bites on large jigs, topwaters, or spoons. The lifeguard reported that a guy got one on fly from his kayak yesterday but did not land it.
Does anyone have experience with this type of beach fishing? Anyone want to go and get frustrated?
