Best day of 2010

Post by fishmaster892 »

Got to the beach around 6:45 not expecting anyone except maybe Russ. I got my gear down to the water realizing it was calm and the gulf was as flat as glass. I quickly jumped in the yak not waiting for anyone else to show up.

I started by catching 2 perfect pin fish! One on my flurocarbon leader for tarpon and the other on a stinger rig for kingfish. I saw a BIG king skyrocket not to far away so I began paddle that direction. Not 5 minutes after putting my baits out my tarpon rod was screaming! I thought I had a shark from what I saw of the fish; Soon realizing it was a cobia I got a little bit more serious about landing the fish for a picture. Well the cobia had spun me around a bit and my other line (which I reeled in) was tangled on my paddle. As I realized what happened I saw my other line go tight and 15ft away a triple diget tarpon came flying out of the water with my rig! Thank god it broke the wire or I could have been in real trouble. I landed the cobia Aka dinner which turned out to be 38" my biggest to date.

I began paddling back towards shore noticing Russ was just showing up! I began seeing bonita, mackeral, and even tarpon showing lots of surface activity. I finally hooked a bonita after 15 different lures!

I paddled to shore to meet my dad who brought a cooler for me and Ice. After cleaning the fish I noticed jesse had just showed up after I gave him a call.

By the time I was relaunching Russ was on his way back in with about a 25lb king! SWEET!

Me and Jesse headed back out and long story short after trolling a lizard fish around for 15 minutes I had my smoker king landed.

Nice report. Makes me want to head back to the beach.
Being out on the water in the kayak is the prize. Catching fish is the bonus.
