Frog is exactly right. 1/60th was a general rule of thumb for a 35mm cam with a 50mm lens. Also if you shoot no slower than 1/focal length, but that's hard to figure out with out some techy knowledge about your sensor size, lens, or the Focal length multiplier. So, I think you've got the right idea. Shoot in Auto Program mode, in the bright light, outside, and I'll bet that you'll capture some amazing images. If you want to be a little more creative, shoot Program mode TV for capturing something moving, and AV for landscapes. Most important, take lot and lots of images. Two great books are understanding exposure, and Learning to see creatively.
