Line for my 8wt?

Post by DaveR »

I need a new floating line for my 8wt. I would appreciate some recommendations as well as your thoughts on up lining to a 9wt. This will be used mostly for fishing reds in shallow water.
Taper advice too.
Thanks in advance.

Wulff bermuda taper. I would not up-line for shallow water fish because, as usual, they are spookier.

Just bought one of these lines, and I LOVE it. I would highly recommend it.

I didn't care for it for some reason.

For around here, I prefer a Redfish taper because it has a shorter head and turns flies over better in the wind. I like the SA Mastery Redfish best, but the Orvis Wonderline Redfish is also good.

I got two free rio lines when I purchased a new rod and reel. I have the bonefish in an 8 and the tarpon in a 12. Both lines love to tangle and are pretty good at burning my fingers as well. Switching back to wulffs soon.

Partial to the airflos for no other reason than that they're indestructible. Haven't had to replace one yet. Got one that's going on 3+ years.

I, too, am a huge Wulff Triangle Taper fan. I have an 8wt Bermuda on the way from Livingston Manor as I type.

Have you stopped at a couple of shops with your rod and asked if they have an 8wt you can throw? See what they have, how it loads the rod, how it matches your casting style...

I may also have a Cortland Tropic you can try.

Ridgeline Distance Taper (I think) on my 8. I've got the hotweather ridgelines no my 10s and 12s.

I second the Wulff triangle taper. I have a 9wt triangle taper on my 8 wt rod for windy days when I'm determined to use fly. Otherwise SA shark skin 8wt on the same rod in normal conditions.
