When I grow up....

Post by Rik »

Sam Root (SaltyShores.com) shot this at the “Big Gun Shootout” held at Picnic Island park in Tampa, Florida by the local Tampa Fly fishing club and shot this video.

The guy's last cast of the day was 138'

I cast one of those rods last year in the LA marsh, pretty sweet stick.

Even though that's 100' short of the record ... I'm still impressed!!

That is pretty awesome but competitions are done with 5 wts. I know a guy that can throw over 100 with a bamboo. I am not taking anything away from this video or this guy, but may not be as great as it seems since it is done with an 8 wt.
I hate to come off like an ass so please don't take it that way.

'Twas not my intention either. ha!

The guy in the video is a regular Joe. 138 feet is awesome. I'd be happy with 100' even if it was aided by an over 8mph wind. ha!!

Steve Rajeff who I was talking about holding the record works/worked for G.Loomis and hand builds to his specs the rods he sets world records with. Pushing 250 feet is awesome in it's own right (I don't care who built the rod) so I am not taking anything away from Rajeff either ... just sayin'.

I could do that .... if I put five of my casts ened to end  .

Several years ago at one of the Bradenton Herald FIshing Colleges there was a demonstator (I think Pete Greenan) giving a lecture on saltwater fly fishing. During most of the presentation he would false cast over the audience with the full length of fly line in the air, with little apparent effort. I've been depressed since then.

I'm sure a 138 foot cast looks cool and all (and congrats are due), but distance is SO over-rated. If you're throwing even half that much line to a fish, your boat is in the wrong place. Practice throwing 50' of line accurately with a single backcast and you'll be well ahead of the curve.

I agree but it sure would be nice to be able to cast that far.

Dave's great, no doubt but I bet he wasn't born that way. Lots of practice to be sure. Something we all could use a little more of. The drill I was told was to practice casting to a dinner plate at 50'. Once you're hitting that consistantly, cast to a bread plate. Once you hit that consistantly, cast into a teacup. Then back of 10 more feet of line and start all over again .......
