One love, one fly

Post by finatic »

If you only had 'one' fly you love to use for every condition/ location for snook, reds, trout
what would it be? :?:

My love would probably be a skinny water clouser.

Norm Zeigler's Crystal Schminnow would be my choice.

I haven't personally caught 17 species of fish but in a magazine article 2-3 years ago that was Norm's claim to fame for that particular fly. He's probably added a few more species by now. I'm sure Trout, Snook and Reds are amongst that list of 17.

Plus, it's soooooooooooo easy to tie.

I was originally going to say a white clouser, but Gil's right, a white crystal schminnow will catch anything. I have fished it off the beach, under docks, in mangroves, in deep holes and over grass flats. It's not my go to fly for any particular species, but is good for all of them.

It's a tossup between a gurgler or a deerhair slider. Dupree Spoon Fly is a close second.

This guy .... white Bonito Bunny. Very easy to tie as well.

Caught innumerable baby tarpon and snook with this fly. Caught a 30" trout at Sebastian a few weeks ago, and have caught reds with this fly as well.

I would say a clouser is #1 and has my full faith no matter what the fish is...thought I had a good picture but obviously I am quite blind without reading glasses

I'm kind of torn. It would probably be a chatreuse and white Clouser with light weight eyes. The white/brown/green Prince of Tides is a close second for me. I catch slightly more fish with the Clouser but like casting the POT better.

I also like the Dupre spoon fly. Anyone know whatever happened to Jim Dupre? Last I knew he was guiding in Cedar Key when he invented the fly.
