Which replacement treble hook?

Post by Rik »

We all change them out from time to time. Some you have to change out before you ever tie on the lure they're attached to. Others are strong enough but rust when they get within 100 feet of saltwater.

What is the best replacement hook these days? 4x strong is preferred. High resistance to corrosion is a requirement.

Looking for two opinions - the best treble regardless of cost and the best bang for the buck.

What DoubleM said, just make sure they're the "Black Nickel" ones. 9626BN

The Galv VMC 4X (9626PS) are pretty much your best bet...when you can find them.
For the price and availability the Eagle Claw 4X are good but be sure to get the black ones and even then rinse them to help with the rust situation.
The Owner Stinger is by far the stongest but they are heavy and seem to affect the action of most lures making them a "no go."

I use the eagle claws. There is a guy on eBay that sells them in bulk, cheapest I have ever seen. They have worked with no problems.

I use VMC galvanized 4x trebble replacements for all around replacement, but more recently I been replacing trebbles with a single short shank J type hook with no noticible loss of hook-up ratio (at least before I was sidelined with this heart issue).

Topwater: Mustad #4 4X Strong Kingfish Red

Topwater Weedless: Single short shank J type hook

MirrOdine 17MR: Mustad #4 4X Strong Kingfish Red. Same as my topwater. They come with #6. I found that the #4 don't really change the action and has a better hook-up ratio.

I usually get a 25CT of the Mustad #4 4X Strong Kingfish Red Treble for $12. High resistance to corrosion. They don't rust.

Could not find the exact seller I purchased from but there are a lot of bulk sellers on ebay that have very good deals.

Anyone have an opinion (man did I really ask that) on red trebles over bronze colored ones?

IMO if the red hooks were more then a gimmick they'd be on every lure. Think about it. If you were a lure manufacturer would you want other lures out catching yours just due to their using red hooks?

Mustad 4x all the way. They've never let me down. Good quality for the money.
