Re: Fly Rod Tilapia

Even the larger tilapia have fairly small mouths so I would go with a size 10, 8 or 6 fly hook. Yes, a trimmed elk hair caddis is ok but clip most of the hair so the fly sinks to the bottom. I just happen to be using a sink tip line as that was the reel that was most handy. A floating fly line with ...

Re: Fly Rod Tilapia

cag215 and all I am planning to cook and eat some of the tilapia from the "retention Pond" That is an inaccurate description for three ponds on a 40 acre farm. The ponds are actually old shallow borrow pits and not near the farming operations where they would receive fertilizer runoff. One...

The fly in the tilapia picture is a light colored caddis fly that I clipped to be a nymph with a short tail.

I have also caught them on yellow, white or pink flies. An old beat up Clouser with plastic bead eyes is great. Just trim the wings really short.

Re: Golf Course Bass

0019 The golf course I refer to is Coral Oaks. It is owned by the City, is well maintained and busy every day and more so on weekends. I know a few people who own houses fronting the greens and lakes and they allow me to fish near their houses. I only fish during bad weather when there are no golfer...

Re: Spillways are like a box of chocolates

I have caught many blue tilapia in the past few weeks. Unlike the ones I have caught in the spring, these fish are aggressive, hit hard and make a few good runs on ultra lite spinning gear. I will try to catch them on flies in the next few days. I know a yellow, white or pink fly will work. I am eve...

Re: Golf Course Bass

I have been catching bluegills and tilapia for the past several weeks. But, yesterday evening a large bass took the little beetle spin meant for panfish. The first bigger bass of the fall season. But we are in for another week of hot weather so I am thinking mid- October before the water begins to c...

Bahamas Bonefish

Has anyone had recent experience fishing for bonefish in the Bahamas?

If so, which island?

I am considering Freeport, Grand Bahama Island mainly because of the amenities and activities available for the non-fishing part of my family.

Re: Govt. Shutdown is going to cancel my trip to Flamingo. H

You may also want to consider a motel in Key Largo. That would put you in the upper portion of Florida Bay. You could Google the location of public parks and boat launches in the Upper Keys, assuming you need a kayak launch. There should be trout and jacks and maybe some tarpon and barracuda. Good l...

That is a nice tilapia. I caught my largest to date also near a spillway in a shallow lake a few weeks ago'

Re: Golf Course Bass

I see some Mayans in the 2# size when I get to Miami and am mainly looking for Peacock Bass.
The big Mayans act uninterested in my small artificial lures.

Re: Golf Course Bass

I agree that the Mayan Cichlids are good fighters for their size. But, the larger ones can be tough to coax into biting on artificials. I never have cooked one up but am going to try them. I have another friend that, like you, loves to fish for and eat them. I have one nearby lake near Cape Coral th...

Re: fishing ding darling need info

Gold spoons work for redfish reeled as slowly as possible without hanging up. I like Mirrolure plugs for snook. The slim body and deeper body suspending twitchbait plugs produce on snook. In natural bait fish finish or classic red and white. If you get out on the flats early in the morning, and the ...

Re: Replacement Lift Handles

Sorry I did not report back sooner. Yes, Paul at Masthead found some exact replacement handles for my Malibu MiniX. And, I installed them without any problem. Had to use some large stainless washers to strengthen the plastic area around the existing holes. Thanks to Paul at Masthead and all of you t...
