Sarasota Bay fly fishing
I had three fly-fishing charters this week with varying degrees of success with varying experience levels and skill. First trip on Wednesday was very slow. My client only caught a few trout, ladyfish and jack crevalle. Second trip on Thursday was better. Two guys (one very good, the other beginner)....

Re: My "go-to flies" for fresh water
Ever tried fishing the popper and nymph or popper and minnow in tandem? Especially with the minnow, twitching the popper gives the underwater fly great action and doubles your baits in the water. Greg Yeah, I try it from time to time. Especially if the fish start hitting the strike indicator. Then ...

Pine Island Sound
It's an all-day affair, but the drive often is worth it -- particularly this time of year when we get some negative low tides. If you're a fly fisher, there's a good chance to cast to tailing reds. It's also a spot that you can get a Grand Slam == trout, redfish, snook and tarpon. It's not easy, but...

My "go-to flies" for fresh water
Used to be, I started with a Skitterpop or No. 10 popper, fished it all day and went home when the action stopped. I've found that when the topwater bite slows or ends, it's often just beginning subsurface. Of course, a popping bug is an exciting fly to use and nothing quite compares to a fish risin...

Lake Manatee revisited
It had been awhile since I fished Lake Manatee. Don't know why such a lull, but what the heck? Took a friend out who had never fly fished and he did amazingly well. We used No. 12 nymphs under a strike indicator and Myakka Minnows. In all, we caught loads of big bluegill, shellcracker, bass, speckle...

For those of you who reside in the Sarasota area, you might want to check out Flying Fish Outfitters, 303 Tamiami Trail South Nokomis, FL 34275 (941) 412-4512. Shawn, the owner, is an avid fly angler and has a pretty good assortment of flies and tying materials. Very nice people who support fly fish...

Great Sarasota Sight-Fishing Day
I had Zach Griffith of Missouri out today for his first Florida saltwater trip. He caught his first seatrout and redfish. Trout action was fast and furious from the start, but mostly small fish. We did manage a 3-pound pompano, though. We moved to another area and got a big trout on DaveR's secret k...

I have been doing well on the MirrOlure Little John (soft plastic) on a 1/16-ounce jig head. Just let the jig fall to the bottom and work slowly. Doesn't take long when the flounder are thick.

Re: What's your go to lure or artificial?
While I do like to use a silver Spook Jr., gold spoon, jerk worm on a light head head and others, my go-to lure in the MirrOlure MirrOdine in either MR14 or MR17. Great all-round lure that consistently produces large seatrout, snook and redfish (ask DaveR how it works on reds!). I DO NOT use the Mrr...

Big Trout Are Back
Last winter and spring arguably were the best months for large spotted seatrout in this area in a long, long time. The fish thinned out somewhat as the water warmed, but they've returned. My clients and I have caught 32 trout of 5 pounds or large since Jan. 1. I added three more last week. My most e...

The Flatties Are Here
This is a great time of year to target flounder. Last Friday, Vinny and I spent the last hour of our trip on Sarasota Bay targetting flounder. We used MirrOlure Little Johns on light jig heads. We found lots of flounder on sand bottoms along the grass edges. Just let the jig fall to the bottom and w...
