I have a travler that is about 17 years old that I bought as a lad. Luckily still no rust. Those things probably really do last a lifetime.

Apparently they have not been to satellite beach after the tarpon are though.

Not shunning. Just saying that if you are going to all the trouble to sight fish skinny water reds from a kayak a fly that lands quietly would be a better idea. Think sparse and matching the color of the bottom. Just trying to help a guy out.

Save the spoon flies for the tourists. There are better option out there, especially if you are tying to sneak up on weary fish in shallow water.

There are a hundred little ways to find the fish in even the poorest of lighting conditions. It is so much fun to discover new ones. Sounds like you are on the right track.
