Re: ? Largemouth Bass News
Manning - thanks for reminding me that evening is a great time for bass - I will try a top water plug in the early evening tomorrow and over the weekend. I am partial to the Heddon Baby Torpedo and Tiny Torpedo in various colors and patterns.

? Largemouth Bass News
Have any of you folk been fishing for largemouth bass?
I have been catching a few in Cape Coral on plastic worms but it seems like the season is off to a slow start.

Re: Peacock Bass 3-25-14
Yes, I got hooked on fishing for peacock bass after I caught the first one in Miami about 10 years ago. Beside being pretty to look at, they do put up a great fight on light spin or fly gear. There should be a good crop of them this late spring summer and fall as I am seeing them again in good numbe...

Peacock Bass 3-25-14
In case you'all forgot what they look like.
There were a very few available yesterday in Miami and I caught two. This photo should be of a pretty male fish.

Re: Help First time fishing Stuart, FL area
Jensen Beach causeway to the north will give you kayak access to lots of good flats. The South side flats are generally more protected. Be aware of traffic in the main north- south boat channel. I have caught trout, pompano and bluefish there.

Re: Kayak Fishing Canine Companion
Rik - thanks for the description and photo of Barnacle - one of his breed is probably very close to what I want - I am still thinking this through but sense that I must get another doggy companion

Kayak Fishing Canine Companion
I would appreciate suggestions from those with experience for small dog breeds to consider as an occasional kayak passenger.
I lost my mini-schnauzerrecently. She was a good size but did not like water.

Re: Everglades Exotics
Very nice report. All fun fish on a light rod. I enjoy catching a few Oscars when I get over to Miami while searching for Peacocks. As for Mayans, they were scarce here in SW Florida for several years after the 2010/11 freezes. I am now seeing some breeding size Mayans in the Cape Coral canals so th...

Re: Baby Tarpon-Update
I was getting discouraged fishing for b-tarpon the past several days. We had an afternoon incoming tide and I would see a few large ones rolling but not a strike. Got a chance to redo in the same creek on a morning incoming tide today and hooked several and landed two. What a difference from the day...

Re: Baby Tarpon
Live shrimp, that would make it easy and also attract snook. I have hooked a few on DOA shrimp but so far this season I have tried to stay with small plugs like the Rapala XRap in size 6. I like the floating Xrap as I can fish it as a top water or make it dive a foot or so. It is so important to fin...

Re: Baby Tarpon
Well, yes, the "baby" tarpon may not migrate further south. Earlier this year they were still in my favorite spots until March. Then, they did go but then probably only out to the shallow bay where they came from. I am starting to see larger ones rolling (teens?). And, these larger ones ar...

Re: Baby Tarpon
DaveR -- I have not run across any studies but I know that last year they stayed around here, Pine Island, through Nov, Dec and into February -- then ? where did they go? My guess is a bit further south say Marco island or even further into the vast flowages that enter Florida Bay from the Everglade...

Re: Baby Tarpon
Vlap-- if your area is Sarasota, you may find that the baby tarpon have already gone south. Last year they stayed around here (Pine Island) until February and then finally disappeared-- I have read that they go down to the Everglades

Re: Baby Tarpon
I caught two baby tarpon today on an incoming tide in a tidal creek here on Pine Island. Longest was 21" but I have been seeing some longer ones. Also caught a few smaller snook in the same creek. The two cold nights have moved the in. Light spinning gear and small shallow diving plugs did the ...
