Re: Once in a lifetime catch 7/31
Congrats! Certainly not common, but not unheard of. I know of at least 12 documented catches of bonefish over the years, including a 26-incher (saw the photo) taken in Manasota Key surf in August of 2008. Capt. Jonnie Walker caught two in one day in Big Pass a few years back. As far as permit go, we...

Return to the scene of the gator trout
I ventured out solo to the spot where my client Chuck Linn had caught and released three gator trout the day prior. I didn't get any. I did land 30 trout to 4 pounds and six redfis (all rats). I hooked a couple of fish that could have been larger trout or redfish, but lost them. http://i10.photobuck...

Check out these trout
Large, I mean really large, trout aren't part of our vocabulary here on the west coast of Florida and, in particular, Sarasota Bay. However, this spring has been the exception. A couple of weeks ago, a friend of mine caught a two 6-pound seatrout in three days. I was in awe. This morning, my client,...

Mission accomplished (with pics)
Mission was to find large redfish, something that had been missing around Sarasota Bay. Plenty of rats, but no bulls. I was determined to find them. I would ignore trout, mackerel, bluefish and pompano. Reds or nothing. Started out very slow. Did pick up a nice trout on a topwater meant for reds. Wh...

Good day on the bay (with pics)
Had fly angler John Garcia of northern California out on Sarasota Bay. I knew it was going to be a good day when he hooked and landed fish on first three casts. That takes the the pressure off. John, using my Big Eye Baitfish on a 6-weight TFO TiCRX, landed spotted seatrout to 22 inches, Spanish mac...

March 7 Sarasota Bay (with pics)
Mission was to find big reds. We failed. We've been catching good numbers of rat reds, but encountering few big fish. I've been poling the flats and not seeing very many at all. We didn't find the big reds. Instead, we found the big snook. Strange. Also caught some nice trout. All fish were taken on...

Took Ken Taylor of North Port out and did well. Totaled 50 spotted seatrout, four redfish, three flounder, two pompano and several ladyfish. Most were taken on D.O.A. CAL Jig with gold paddle tail. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a139/flherd1971/20110223_5578_edited-1.jpg http://i10.photobucket.co...

Upper Manatee River (with pics)
Hit the upper Manatee River. First time on the river since fall. Have a trip there on Monday, so I wanted to check it out. Bad tide. It was slack and then incoming. Fishing was slow, but I caught about 30 bluegill and a couple of bass. Caught fish on No. 10 popper and my Myakka Minnow. http://i10.ph...

No snook, but good action
The snook bite was non-existent -- I think because of a poor tide. But the bass made up for it. I caught a number of them, all of D.O.A. 4-inch jerk worms on 1/16-ounce CAL jig heads. Best of the day was a 5-pounder. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a139/flherd1971/AAAbigbass.jpg http://i10.photobu...
