Fish Pineland Saturday, maybe Sunday too!
Will probably launch around sunrise- white truck, dark green canoe. Not the greatest tide, maybe a little windy but it's what I got! I stink at fishing the place too. Off the water by noon then stop in next door at the Tarpon Lodge for a cold one. If anyone is heading this way and wants to fish, sho...

Re: Cool sighting frm PFTS #1

Everything about snook- from the 2005 stock assessment. BTW, all of this was presented to the stakeholders (general public) at the Institute in St. Pete. If you have the time and really want to learn the science behind the scenes, this is the read. http://research.myfwc.com/engine/download_redirecti...

Ok, ok----we call them "Bee-cry" for short. Have some other interesting nicknames for fish. A few I regretfully cannot post.
We call
Lizardfish- "Donkey fish".
Redfish- "Redbird".

That is a Bairdiella chrysoura or common name, "Silver perch". It is a scianedae spp./member of the drum family. We catch them all over the place in our trawls, small and big seines. Butterfish is Northern Gulf of Mexico vernacular for the species Lei. xanthurus or common name, "Spot&...

Re: I.D. this fish.
I have really gotten into freshwater fish ID this year at work so I'll give it a whirl. If I would hazard a guess from your picture, I would say gizzard shad, Dorosoma cepedianum . At the very least it is a member of the family Clupeidae. Do you think your fish looked like this one below? http://www...

Re: Friday at the Fort
Dave, Same here. Last weekend John and I took the skiff to N. Captiva to fish off the beach. It's a 49 mile roundtrip from Matlacha. We left in the dark. Our sole mission was to catch a tarpon on fly. We are sitting quiet when up pops a tail. I don't know if you see it where you fish, but tarpon tai...

More Appropriate Here
Mission accomplished. One big tarpon jumped yesterday, on deadbait, on flyrod in south Matlacha Pass. Hooked one unidentified shark too. Didn't have to break tarpon off. Fish ate bait, thought I set the hook, fish swung around, jumped towards me and spat out the mullet head right next to the canoe. ...
