When the wind pushes the bow to the side, you would need a fair sized skeg mounted near the bow which would cause drag. The other cure is a rudder which is adjusted to match speed and wind forces.
The longer the moment arm between the paddle and skeg, the better it would work.

Re: Feds blowing up Gulf Snapper?
Reminds me of when the perigan falcon numbers went down and they sent some college students out with shotguns to gather specimens.

Re: Kingfish Release Mortality
Manning brings up a good question. Back when we fished for kings, we never caught one small enough to have to release. Those choppers make a bluefish jealous.

Ouch
Had a windstorm catch my daughter and me out in a canoe once, so things can change really fast. If you have never seen a fast wind change like that, you are lucky. Had we not come across a group of Army Rangers, we would have been in the water for sure.

Re: Baitcasting reel recommendations
I would love to get my hands on a 4500 size reel with bushings. My old reel is much smoother than the new ones fitted with ball bearings.

Re: Sh**t Happens
I duck hunted out of an open canoe for years and have some hairey tales to tell about my lack of judgement, so if I sound critical do not get excited. Once we had to crawl up a flooded tree and had to have someone else push our craft to us. The water temp was 45 deg, but thankfully the other party s...

Re: Baitcasting reel recommendations
You cannot beat the Ambassadeurs for use in salt water, but we also use Revos and Daiwa Coastal casting reels for lighter baits. The small free spool reels which disengauge the level wind for casting have an edge in casting small baits, but you want to watch maintenance closely. The standard 4000-50...

Re: too damn close
The shame is that crazy people are coming out of the woodwork like termites. Also, like termites, you never know they are around until it is too late. They are drawn to places where no firearms are allowed as they can do their damage with no concerns about being challenged. The fact that crime has g...

Re: Chugging Spook
I am with Manning and seldom throw a full size Mirror Lure or Spook.
I have never done as well on reds as the gold spoon does, but wow when they hit a topwater.

Re: Bass Pro Shops moving to Tampa...
You are very lucky to have the tackle stores you have, but if it were not for Bass Pro, we would be in trouble up here. I never miss getting to Bill Jacksons or the Bait Bucket when down there though. We had a local store here which was the cats whiskers for outdoor stuff, but it went away. Cabalas ...

Joe, thank you for the confirmation. People questioning the legend make me nervous. It is as if something I believed in were being thrown under a bus.

Re: DaveR featured in blog
Don't pick on my hero - he exists, I know he must exist. I have come as close to seeing him as to have a friend say "DaveR is over there", but there was no kayak in sight. He told me he actually fished with the Legend himself a time or two. My wife even overheard a lady say that DaveR woul...

Re: Open Carry
I prefer to watch my surroundings and not carry normally, but when using boat ramps with my wife during the night, I feel better with my S&W in an accessible pocket. The design is such that the Smith can be fired from within a pocket in an emergency or pulled out of the pocket without hanging up...
