Re: heading to mosquito lagoon next week need some insight

Drive down the Biolab dirt road and pick your launch spot, you can launch right at the Whale tail area, or the sticks - easy to spot since there are sticks in the water. I tend to avoid the boat launch areas since there are strange things that make lotsa noise and smelly smoke.

Re: Hall of Shame

I love the IRS, I got an $8000+ refund 4 days after filing electronically... but then my medical expenses were $70K last year.

Re: One of Ours?

Maybe they measured from the ground to the wave tip, in 9' 6" of water.
Otherwise they must have been smoking good stuff.

Re: D5000

If you are buying it for the video - then don't. If you are anything more than a casual photographer then you will soon be looking for something better. If you only want to take family photos then it is fine, or save some $$$ and get the D3000, it is basically the same camera without the crappy video.

Re: MacDill Airfest 2010

With VR/IS lenses you can go with a slower shutter than the 1/focal length rule of thumb, usually by 2 or 3 stops. I recently read an article where the author stated that you should not use VR/IS when you are panning objects, such as planes in this case. He claims that VR/IS introduces blur when pan...

Neat photos. I need to get back out there to Paynes Prairie. Where do you go when you are there?

Re: MacDill Airfest 2010

You want to control the shutter speed, so go for S. P will also work, but this tends to give you average aperture and shutter values and that may not be what you want. Just a tip, don't shoot old propeller driven planes with a very high shutter speed, this freezes the prop and nothing looks as silly...

Re: Still trying HDR

Trees and water are generally not good HDR subjects, they move too much and you get the ghost effect. Try the inside of a building with light shining in through a window and dark corners somewhere. Also try a night shot of an old building with bright neon signs, that works well. The key is to have a...

Anyone else ever been bitten by a goose? Sure, it's funny, but you would be surprised how much it hurts... Yeah they sure can put some hurt on you, and wait until they whack you with their wings. I grew up on a farm and my grandparents and parents always had geese around and they sure beat us up wh...

I once saw an amazing roof rack construction from 1" galvanized water pipe and a collection of elbows and tees and whatnot, I'm sure that will be well within you budget. :D I wish I had take a photo... but the owner/inventor was standing nearby and did not look like the type that had much of a ...
