"Stuck-Ups" fly
Here's a technique you can apply to to many different patterns, and it's simple -- just add foam underneath the tail of a fly. Here is a typical Flats Bunny fly constructed with all rabbit. But underneath the tail, I've glued a small strip of foam directly to the underhide of the rabbit to get the t...

Re: What size line/ rod for tarpon?
You will get lots of different responses, I suspect .... Just last weekend, I was fishing with a guide for laid-up tarpon in the 80-140 lb class. The guide said we could use our 8wts!! I was a little shocked. He said the fish will never get that far from the boat, so no need for all the backing, etc...

Kinky Muddler attempt ....
Tried tying up some Kinky Muddlers for Tarpon -- these are about 4-5" long on 3/0 hooks .... Need to work on elongating the profiles, but they do have a nice fat, round head and should push a lot of water. Instructions: http://www.danblanton.com/blog/kinky-muddler-by-jonny-king/" onclick=&...

Articulated flies (work-in-progress)
Working on using articulation to get see if I can get a bit more movement when stripping the fly. Using this product: http://flymenfishingcompany.org/products/fish-skull%E2%84%A2-products/articulated-shank/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Here's what I've come up with so far...

Re: Tomorrow I be gurgling
Dave: good at cha' for throwing the top-water. Here on the East Coast we have lots of trout up in the shallows right now. They're spooky as all get-out when it's light, so the best time to throw the popper is pre-dawn. Got two on Sunday -- one was a legit 24" -- on an all-white foam popper with...

I like it, maybe a little lead foil on the shank prior to tying to get it down. I'll take 6 in a Rootbeer color scheme please mate! :thumbleft: Something like this? :) http://inlinethumb49.webshots.com/48368/2203804070049956418S500x500Q85.jpg Easy to color the craft fur for markings, etc ...... her...

Deadhead Minnow tie .....
Found this tie from a guy in Louisiana; what I liked about it was it creates a nice round-headed profile unlike most of my ties that are more profile-oriented. He calls it a "Deadhead Minnow". Materials: Craft fur and flash of your choice Hook: 2 to a 1/0, regular shank, your choice Eyes: ...

Dave, finally had a chance to throw it and yes -- sadly, it spins quite a bit. Oh well .....DaveR wrote:Do they spin a lot when casting?

Re: South Florida trip ... Midas cichlid
I fish those canals occasionally when I'm working down in Miami, and have seen the Midas but never tried for them on fly. What pattern were you using? Nice job John, I used a small (#8), bright minnow pattern called a Mickey Finn. But I don't think it was the pattern, per se. The Midas was hovering...

South Florida trip ... Midas cichlid
I made a trip to South Florida a few weeks ago -- Miami to be exact -- to try and fish Biscayne Bay for bonefish. As you might expect, the weather decided it was not going to cooperate and decided to blow like snot. Luckily, there's some nice, semi-protected freshwater fishing in the canals for exot...

Have any of you experimented with "Fly-Lipps"? http://www.flylipps.com/index.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; It's a tie-on plasic lip that should impart a little side-to-side wiggle to your fly when retreived. I've tied these up, and initial pond-testing does ...

Easy tie redfish flies
Here are a couple of flies I recently tied for redfish. I like patterns that are quick to tie; these only take 2-3 min. First two pics are the same fly, just different colors and a slighly different material for the body. Tails are EP fiber, the body is hackle fiber. Bead chain eyes. http://inlineth...

More wiggle-tail fly ties ...... The first two are the same tail material as my first bunny fly, but I'm using EP fiber for the body and for the tail on the second one ..... http://inlinethumb64.webshots.com/44607/2161579870049956418S500x500Q85.jpg http://inlinethumb41.webshots.com/45928/21666070800...

Re: Flies with wiggle tails ....
I've seen some work with articulation flies, but they were always on much larger patterns (like for northern pike); haven't seen many for shorter (say 2-3") lengths ....
How would you create the articulation? Got any pics you can share?

Flies with wiggle tails ....
I got turned on to the idea of trying to create flies with better tail action. Take a look at the following video .... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fJx44Uhhqs I found some similar (maybe not as flexible) material at the craft store, and I tied up a wiggle-tail version of my standard bunny fly ......
