Re: Good low tide

Sunday a.m. trip for tarpon was postponed. Too rough in the surf, so after a good hour or two seeing if the conditions would calm down, we headed to 4th street. Water was already up and the parking lot full, but I decided to make the best of it by paddling up the near side of Big Island and letting ...

Re: Good low tide

I would stick to learning an area, using spinning gear but have the fly tackle with you for when the opportunity presents itself. There are no short cuts to experience Mike, as I said when we spoke on the phone gaining the knowledge of your "home" water is paramount to fishing success. Go...

Re: Good low tide

Standing helps. I'm probably going to have to get in some clearer water to make that work this time of year. The water at Picnic Island and Legion, 4th street (places I've been regularly) just doesn't have the clarity I think I need. Fort DeSoto may be in my plans.

Re: Good low tide

After grinding away since late March/early April a couple times a week (at least) on the water in search of sight-fished reds, I've come to the conclusion that it's really, really tough in the summer. For good sight fishing conditions you need the tide, wind and moon to align (at least ideally). Wel...

Glad I'm not totally incompetent.http://paddle-fishing-forum.com/posting.php?mode=reply&f=13&t=36904#" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; ... I probably need to be a little more flexible and go to the spinning rod when conditions warrant. I'm pretty committed to using th...

Re: Good low tide

Waded Legion flats. Had a 0.2. Got there before the low, which was 7 and stayed til almost dark. Had a tough ass West wind 12-15. My guess is that pushed some water into the flat. It was skinny (though not as much as I had hoped), but there was a chop so it was hard to see, even harder to fly cast. ...

Re: Good low tide

Dave: 0.2 at around 7, Port Tampa. Got it marked. Can stay a little later if I need to. Hopefully the winds will cooperate and if they don't, I should be OK because I'll be wading, so getting blown around in the native won't be an excuse.

... I'm finally catching on.

Re: Heading to the Beach

I doubt they show this week as well. West winds predicted almost every day. I live in S. Tampa, but I try to hit Honeymoon once week --- pain in the ass drive, but a beautiful place --- about once a week. I'll let you guys know what's going on --- and if anything changes.

Re: So it begins, a serious case of tarpon fever

Noles, Let us know how you do and keep us posted on your quest. I'd to try tarpon from a yak with the long rod, but I just started in the saltwater game this spring, even though I've fly fished for a number of years. My goal is to be ready to go for the tarpon/beach gig by next spring. ... Gotta con...

Re: Heading to the Beach

Outstanding. Let us know how you do. I was at Honeymoon Island a couple weeks ago and didn't see any on the beaches. I have friends in Sarasota who say they've arrived. Hopefully, they're up here by now.

Re: Good low tide

Went back out Thursday evening. The low was 0.1 at 8:30. Couldn't fish the incoming because PIsland closes at dusk. Had to hustle back to the launch around 8. Barely made it out of there in time. Back to the flats: This was the first real low tide I'd fished since moving here and I now understand wh...

Re: Good low tide

We've got a good low tide coming up this Wed. evening -- 0.4 in Port Tampa and 0.3 in Dunedin --- unusual for this time of year. I've had this marked on my calendar for weeks. Anyone going out to take advantage of the skinny water? I know I'll be out there. I've been waiting for this tide for weeks...

Re: Moving to Tampa

If you're in South Tampa, you should explore Picnic Island, some excellent Redfish opportunities there, especially with a kayak. Yeah, I should. Fished Legion Flats several times. Fished Picnic Island once, but didn't really venture beyond the flat that PI Creek flows into. I should have gone farth...

Re: Moving to Tampa

Went to Weedon last Monday. Too much water. Had a 1.4 low with a high of 1.6. Went to Honeymoon for beach snook and redemption. No snook yet, but I hear they're in Sarasota on the beaches, so hopefully that's a good sign for us. Didn't bring the yak, but I will next time. Great looking water. Clean,...
