Beat the Heat
I've lived in Florida for most of my life. Is it just me or is this the hottest summer ever? It's brutal to be on the water during mid-day. But if you get out before dawn, it's very comfortable -- especially if you're fishing dock lights. I've been getting tarpon, snook, spotted seatrout, lookdown a...

Fly Fishing for Channel Catfish
The difference between freshwater channel cats and saltwater catfish is night and day. Most saltwater hacks detest catfish. They're beloved in fresh water. In fact, there are guides throughout the southeastern United States who specialize is leading client to cats. We're fortunate enough here to hav...

NuCanoe's new Pursuit
I've always wanted to design a fishing kayak, but I just don't have that talent. I'll leave that to the folks with that expertise. However, I've paddled quite a few different brands of fishing kayaks over the years, and I've had a few ideas that I would like to incorporate into a fishing design. Mos...

Everglades Fun and Exotics
Hit the Everglades for the last time until December. Action was good, but shortened by thunderstorms. Those storms, high water, heat and bugs make The 'Glades tough to fish until cooler, dryer weather. For the most part, we used 3- and 4-weight fly rods, Myakka Minnows and/or No. 10 poppers. We tota...

Couple of productive flies
Here are a couple of lies I've been using around Sarasota Bay. I've been catching lots of trout, snook, redfish, bluefish, mackerel and jack crevalle. The Greenback works well on a floating line in shallow water. I use the Clouser on a sink tip line in deeper water. I tie the material far back on th...

Sarasota reds on fly
I've been doing pretty well on fly in Sarasota Bay, catching lots of trout, big blues, mackerel, jacks, etc. I've even been catching a few redfish on my Gibby's Greenback Fly. http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a139/flherd1971/image_zpsd4025675.jpg http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a139/flherd1971/im...

Just Google "tying the Myakka Minnow" and you'll find out how.cag215 wrote:Do you have a tutorial on how to tie that fly?

Everglades Exotics
This is the time of year to head for the Everglades to fly fish for exotics. Actually, you can fish any way you desire, but I like to cast flies to these fish. I target the exotics: oscar and Mayan cichlid. Every once in a while, we'll get a peacock bass or two. Like many fish around this great stat...

Re: Which braid to use?
I have used most brands of braid and prefer PowerPro. FINS is a little too "thick" for me. I have spoken to the people at Ohero and they're somewhat anti-kayak, so I crossed them off my list.

No boat required. Guides are available at the local fly shop, but I'm not sure you need one.

Fly Fishing for Carp
While this wasn't kayak fishing, it could have been. Anyway, I'm sure some people here will be interested. Just got back from Traverse City, Mich. Second time I've visited there to fly fish for giant carp on the shallow flats of Grand Traverse Bay. Both times have been memorable with loads of fish. ...
