Re: Nautical map
I usually just pull up Google Earth on my iPhone and navigate with that. You would be surprised at the seemingly-isolated places I still get reception (like Bull Bay). The only time it's ever failed was at Whitewater Bay.

Re: tippet knots
Pushing the forward cast too hard is a very common problem. While self-diagnosing casting problems is tough, you know you are pushing too hard on the cast if: 1) The flyrod itself makes an audible whistle as it moves back and forth 2) You send out pressure waves from the kayak or boat while casting ...

Re: How not to spend Sunday with a flyrod.
Hard times, Shamus. But all part of the reason that a fish caught on fly is worth a dozen snagged with bait. Just keep practicing...

Re: Simple Request / Salty Fly Report
Don't get too frustrated, Heywood. Seems like everyone (including the top teams) was wading and blind-casting that day. Not really what the flyrod was intended for. Biggest problem is that if you can't see the fish's reaction to the fly, you don't get any feedback that helps you narrow down the best...

Re: tippet knots
Most likely, it's that the tip of your flyrod is not traveling in a straight line as you cast. This creates a "tailing loop" in your line, which translates to knots when it reaches the end of your tippet. Could also be that your tippet is too light for your fly - should be 20# for most sal...

Saw this yesterday. "There, I Fixed It" is one of my favorite sites! This guy may have the right idea - now he just needs to mount a couple leaf blowers to the back of that thing

Re: Theft of Fishing Gear!
I've owned several waterproof digital cameras over the last few years and here's what I can tell you: they all take similar quality pics, and they all have similar features. The one thing that really sets them apart is the Operating Software (i.e. the menu screens). IMO, Pentax is BY FAR the most in...

Re: Flies with wiggle tails ....
I've noticed that Snook, Reds and Tarpon all tend to follow a fly (but not eat it) FAR more often, and for FAR longer, than they would follow an artificial of any type. Still not exactly sure why this is - perhaps because they aren't triggered to eat the fly in the same way they are triggered to eat...

Re: Flies with wiggle tails ....
Nice concept. Will be curious to see how it works. I've played with similar designs in the past, and found that you'll get a lot of "short strikes" on the tail extension. My solution was to use a tandem hook design, with the trailer hook connected by dacron (or gel spun) backing to the pri...

Re: phillippi creek estate launch--Sarasota, fl
Just wanted to reiterate that boat traffic at Phillippi Creek on weekends SUCKS. You may want to consider somewhere else, esp if you're going with your kid. South Creek (Oscar Sherar Park) is nice, although not as fishy...

Very interesting post..... In the next few minutes going to order the twin pack from Cabela's. One pee bottle should be able to handle it    Just make sure to put the bottle in a secure place, lest you roll over in the middle of the night and accidentally crush it, soaking your sleep...

Re: A "fly" Day
So YOU'RE the guy Rich was talking about! Heard the story of "somebody" catching 5 Reds on his custom fly the other day. I guess it's a small world among (fly) fishermen. Very nicely done, sir!! It's amazing how much more fun they are on fly, isn't it?

Re: Insect Reppelent and Plastic parts
Don't forget that sunscreen also destroys flyline, although not as quickly as DEET.
