Last Night's Delta IV Launch

The Delta IV took off from Cape Canaveral last night at 9pm after many months delay. This is a 211 second time exposure taken from about 12 miles west of the pad. If you look closely near the apex of the curve, you can see the SRBs tumbling downward. Gorgeous launch! http://img.photobucket.com/album...

Re: Baby Tarpon

Tommy has the right idea. Baby tarpon eat a fly better than anything. That is particularly true for fish in more heavily pressured areas. I throw gurglers like what Tommy posted or deerhair sliders that scoot along just under the surface and produce a small wake. I've always had the best success wit...

Re: NMZ 12/7

Rik, The irony of that is that I actually did catch the fish by hand. When I him up to my feet, I watched as the hook just fell out. Before the fish could react, I plunged my hand down and grabbed the tail. He went nuts, but I managed to hold on long enough to get the other hand in position. Very fo...

NMZ 12/7

Got out to the NMZ this morning for the first time in a few months. You could not ask for better conditions. Fish should have been everywhere, but they weren't. I spent the first few hours after daybreak slowly cruising the shallows searching out targets that might be interested in my deerhair slide...

Re: Baby Tarpon

I'm not convinced that they actually migrate. I tend to believe that they seek out deep, stagnant water with mud bottom during the coldest parts of the winter. Some of the best baby tarpon fishing I had last year around Merritt Island was in February between cold fronts. One day, there was no sign o...

Re: Flamingo didn't disappoint

John, Interesting. We had more or less an opposite experience a few weeks prior. Pretty much every downed tree with a little nearby water movement on the east side of Whitewater held snook. We only fished them a couple days in favor of tarpon out on the coast, but it was snook city. Definitely the b...

Re: Flamingo didn't disappoint

Excellent report and pictures. There's nothing better than baby poons on fly. Flamingo is a special place.

No tripod. I was braced against my truck.

Next Atlas launch is at 3 am on Sept. 18. Definitely going to shoot that one.

Re: Off to Flamingo

Good luck Dave. I just spent a week down there on the Gulf coast north and south of the Shark River and the fishing was fantastic. Tarpon and monster sharks galore. It was difficult to get smaller fish to the boat without something eating them...

Re: Flyfishing Baby Tarpon in The Everglades (pic heavy)

Great report Tommy! I love that place.

I have to say though that the land-based baby poon fishing around my place on Merritt Island is likely better than what I've experienced in the Glades. You should make a trip over before the cool weather hits. Deerhair sliders are the ticket.

So sad to hear this news :(. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mark, but have followed his posts on the forum for the past 10 years or so. He seemed like a genuinely great guy.

Atlas V Launch Photos 7/19

These were shot last Friday (7/19) from a distance of about 1.5 miles. 70-300 VR. The cloud base was really low at launch, so the rocket was gone from view in less than 10 s. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/gators15/DSC_6052.jpg http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v56/gators15/DSC_6055.jpg http:...

Re: Pretty Cool Video

That was great. Thanks for the link. I've been fishing the Trail for many years and it has provided some amazing memories. Without a doubt, I've caught 100 times as many snook on the Trail as I have anywhere else in the state. It is a fly-fisherman's haven (albeit, with its own unique set of challen...

SpaceX Falcon 9 Launch 3/1/2013

I shot these images on Friday of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch from Canaveral. Unfortunately, my ideal viewing spot (which is about 1 mile away) was blocked off for road construction, so the hangar is in the way in the first few shots (these were shot from about 2.5 miles away). Still a good view. Thes...
