My First Tarpon

Post by Manning »

I have been going to the beach 2 to 3 times a week since the middle of May. I have had great luck at getting the tarpon to hit, but until today I had not been able to keep one on the hook. I was honestly starting to wonder if I knew what the hell I was doing. This morning I had two takes that went absolutely no place. One jumped and was gone, and the second one was gone before it even jumped. I was sitting and looking up the beach when I felt my rod jump. I looked for the bobber and it was gone. I got a good grip on my rod and started reeling. There it was finally, the good solid weight of the fish at the other end of the line. What happened for the next 10 to 15 minutes is kind of a blur to me now. Some of the other guys tell me that the fish jumped 5 times during the fight. Shortly after I hooked up DaveR came in and coached me and hung with me through the fight. Noles also came over and acted a photographer. I assume he will post the pictures he took. Once I had the the fish along side the boat DaveR hooked on to my kayak and provided the tow for the fish revival. I am happy to report that after a short time the fish was revived and swam away. Thank again everyone for your help.
Being out on the water in the kayak is the prize. Catching fish is the bonus.

Absolute pleasure being with ya Steve. You fought it well but without many grunts or groans. We'll work on the vocals Tues.
